Does working well under stress mean you need to be in control of your emotions?

In many businesses today we adopt a management style for teaming that is underpinned by the condition.

“If your having fun it will get done”.

That is all well and good, but it is not all ways so easy to define what is fun especially if our business aim is to create value and wealth for all the stakeholders. In the work environment stressful situations by nature are the norm.  Deadlines, competition, change and many competing agendas are inbuilt variables that clash with our expectations and can potentially cause great unhappiness.

For many accepting a job to be boxed in and focused may seem a good way to avoid the headaches, as the front line takes the heat while we can just do our jobs.

But when things change or don’t go as planned it can get uncomfortable. Then we to have ways to step aside from destructive emotions while we get things clear. That way we can remain in control to manage things so we can still enjoy the success of getting results. This way  stressful circumstances then far more likely have good outcomes.

Understanding that is all good motherhood stuff we need to get but we also need tools to get the value.

Frustration

One of the best things you can do is to stop and evaluate yourself, and look at the situation

Identifying a positive aspect of your situation often makes you look at things in a different way

The last time you were frustrated about something, the situation probably worked out just fine

Worry

  • Worrying about bad things that might happen does you no good
  • Don’t forget to break
  • Improve your situation
  • Write your worries down and then schedule a time to deal with them

Anger

  • Out-of-control anger is perhaps the most destructive emotion that people experience in the workplace
  • Recognize when you are becoming angry and learn to step back
  • If you become angry stop, breathe and relax
  • Imagine how you look and behave when you’re angry, you have insight to perceive it isn’t good
Dislike
  • Always be respectful to those you work with
  • Always be professional and be assertive

Distrust

  • Establish credibility and consistency
  • Demonstrate commitment

Disappointment

  • Take a moment to look at yourself and realize that things won’t always go your way
  • If you’re disappointed that you didn’t reach a goal, that doesn’t mean the goal is no longer reachable
  • If you fall out of the saddle, then get back on
  • Write down exactly what is making you unhappy

Humour

  • Always be polite and ‘politically correct’
  • Occasionally, smile but do not over-do it
